Grill

We play a game on a daily basis around here. Dorothy loves it. I just try to keep up. I call it Grill. Here's how it goes.
Dorothy: Okay Mom, I'll be the Mom, you be the grill. (Clearly, she means girl. But I can still laugh at the mispronunciation, right?)
Me: Okay, Dorothy.
D: NO, GRILL! I'm your MOM!
Me: Right right right. Okay Mom.

What follows is hours and hours of me addressing her as Mom. Which, really, sounds ridiculous in certain contexts.
"Mom, you need to go potty before we leave." or "Mom, eat three more bites." or my personal favorite "Mom, stop licking your sister!" (That's from another GREAT game called Dorothy Dog. I bet you can't guess how that one works. And by great what I mean is it would be really great if she didn't try to lick me or the babies.)
Things just seem to happen more easily if I call her Mom. When I say "Mom, clean up your toys." She sometimes even responds with, "Well, okay Grill. Just because I love you a lot Grill." (An important rule with "Grill," use Mom and Grill as many times in a sentence as possible. Tack it onto the end of sentences, etc. Anywhere it fits, use it.) For the sake of being realistic, this response probably happens, oh, 10% of the time. But it's worth a shot.

Here's the tricky part. It changes. After seeing Tangled, she decided that we should play Beautiful Princess and Mother. And I can't call her just Princess, she is Beautiful Princess, thank-you-very-much.
Other times, we play Mother Bird and Baby Bird (a la "Are You My Mother").
Hence the pillow nest which she did NOT want to clean up.

With a few variations, sometimes it switches between three or four of the variations in the period of an hour. And it is very upsetting if I don't keep it straight. The amazing thing is that this game has persisted. It lasts all day for a few days in a row at times.
I love this girl. She's such a character.

A couple of our kids always said "grill" for "girl". Sometimes those words stick, even to this day - swimming soup(suit) and dubs (gloves). Dorothy is a hoot.

I miss hearing Dorothy say, "Grill!" She is quite the "grill!" Or is it "Mom!"
