...to find out that she is lactose intolerant. The first night we gave her a bottle of not-breast-milk, she was up all night throwing up. The flu, we thought. Bummer. We had some breast milk stored, so we gave her that in a bottle for a few days, then switched back. Again, throwing up. Now we understand (we catch on quickly, did you notice?). Looks like we have to get creative.
We're talking to doctors and nurses about what we can do (breastmilk is gone now!). Anyone have any advice? She doesn't like soy or almond milk (though she'll take chocolate of either. Surprise surprise. Maybe we'll just keep trying.) It's a darn good thing that most of what she eats is solid now, and she is not too dependent on milk or bottles, though she still needs some. I'm thanking my lucky stars I nursed for this long. That could have been a real mess.

You nursed for 16 months?!?! Wow. I had no idea. Was it because it's cheaper? I couldn't really nurse Paxton, so he only got the boob for about 5 weeks, and that wasn't even for every feeding. I was sad. My family just can't seem to produce the milk for our babies.
I'm so sorry about the milk issue! Is she like that with all milk products?...milk seems to be in everything these days. That can be soo tricky. She's awfully cute, though! I love that picture. And, btw: you are amazing to have breastfed as long as you did. I'm SO impressed.
I nursed that long because I couldn't stop!
I tried a couple times, and it hurt too bad. So I kept going. I think I make a lot of milk.
It's not all milk things. She had that super strong reaction to straight milk, but she's had cheese and yogurt and ice cream before and been ok. I notice that when she has very much of something (ie lots of yogurt) she'll have the runs for a day or so after. That makes me wonder if she's hurting after other dairy, but it's not strong enough to show through runs or throwing up. I wish she could tell us. Dallin thinks maybe this milk was bad- but it's not expired and tastes fine. She also got the runs with formula too, which makes me think it's more than bad milk. I don't know. I don't want to try again for a little bit, but we'll see.
It sounds like it's a milk allergy rather than lactose intolerance. Lactose is the sugar in all milk, including breast milk, so if she was lactose intolerant, she would have had similar symptoms while nursing. It is pretty common for toddlers to have an allergic-type reaction to cow's milk when it is first introduced. Most kids grow out of this allergy, so wait a little while and try milk products again. If it's a true milk allergy she will not tolerate any milk products. For now, just use milk substitutes but make sure you're getting in the calcium. Ask your Dr. what you should do, and when to try milk again. I hope she starts to feel better soon!
